Heat pumps
Who installs heat pumps in Halifax?
Denate Co. Inc. is a Halifax heat pump and electrical company. We install ductless, multi-zone and ducted heat pumps, convert oil-heated homes to heat pumps, repair and maintain existing systems, and handle all the electrical work in-house, for homes and businesses across Halifax and Nova Scotia.
How much does a heat pump cost in Nova Scotia?
It depends on the system and the home. A single-room ductless unit, a multi-zone system and a ducted whole-home system are very different jobs, and things like your electrical panel, line-set length and how many rooms you want to heat all change the price.
The fastest way to a real number is our free Heat Pump Plan: within 24 hours you get a written price with Good, Better and Best options, your monthly payment with financing and any rebates you qualify for.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Many single-room ductless installs are finished the same day. Multi-zone systems usually take one to three days, and ducted systems can take longer depending on the ductwork. Your Heat Pump Plan includes your timeline.
Do heat pumps work in a Nova Scotia winter?
Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating in deep cold, and a correctly sized system will heat most Nova Scotia homes through the winter. We size every system for your home and our winters, and we will tell you honestly if you should keep your existing heat as backup for the coldest nights.
Will I need an electrical panel upgrade for a heat pump?
Sometimes. Every heat pump needs its own circuit, and some older 100 amp panels do not have the room or capacity. We check your panel on the first visit, and because Denate is also an electrical company, any circuit or panel work is done by our own team, so you are not juggling two contractors.
Rebates
What heat pump rebates are available in Nova Scotia in 2026?
Through Efficiency Nova Scotia, most homeowners use the Home Energy Assessment program: up to $5,000 in rebates, including $300 per ton for ductless and $500 per ton for ducted heat pumps. The assessment costs $199 (free for qualifying low and moderate income households).
Moderate income households can add Moderate Income Rebate top-ups of up to $5,000 more, for up to $10,000 combined. Lower income homeowners may qualify for no-charge upgrades through HomeWarming. Program rules change, so confirm before you buy. Your free Heat Pump Plan checks this for you.
Do I need an energy assessment before installing a heat pump?
For Efficiency Nova Scotia's Home Energy Assessment rebates, yes. Book the first assessment before any work, complete your upgrades, then book the final assessment. You have 12 months from your first assessment to finish the work. Installing first and applying later is the most common way people lose a rebate.
Is the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program still open?
No. Efficiency Nova Scotia closed the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program to new applicants in July 2026. Oil-heated homes can still switch to a heat pump using the Home Energy Assessment program, and moderate income households can add Moderate Income Rebate top-ups.
Who is allowed to install a rebate-eligible heat pump?
Efficiency Nova Scotia requires heat pumps in its rebate programs to be installed by a certified Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM). Ask any installer to confirm this before you sign.
What is a free Heat Pump Plan?
It is our free, written plan for your home, delivered within 24 hours: the right-size system with Good, Better and Best options, your price in writing, your monthly payment with financing, your install timeline, and any rebates you qualify for right now, with the steps in the right order.
Financing & maintenance plans
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing is available on heat pump installs, panel upgrades and electrical work, on approved credit. Your Heat Pump Plan shows your monthly payment next to each option, and our payment calculator gives you a quick estimate.
What can I finance with Denate?
Heat pump installs, including ductless, multi-zone and ducted systems and oil to heat pump switches, plus panel upgrades and other electrical work. Ask what applies to your project and we will show the monthly payment in your plan.
Can I use financing and rebates together?
Usually, yes. Efficiency Nova Scotia rebates are paid after your final assessment, so financing covers the cost up front and many homeowners put the rebate toward the balance once it arrives. Check your loan's prepayment terms first.
What is the Denate Comfort Club?
It is our yearly maintenance plan for heat pump owners: a tune-up every year before winter, priority booking when you have no heat, and member savings on repairs. It keeps your system efficient and catches small problems before they turn into no-heat calls.
Does the Comfort Club include repairs?
Repairs are not included in the membership, but members get priority booking and member savings on repairs, so a problem gets fixed sooner and for less.
Repairs, emergencies & areas
Do you offer emergency heat pump and electrical service?
Yes. Call or text (902) 789-9851 and tell us it is urgent. Urgent calls, like no heat in winter, a heat pump that will not start or lost power to part of your home, go straight to our team, who will tell you how quickly we can get to you.
If you smell burning or see sparks, switch off the breaker for that circuit if it is safe to do so. If there is fire, smoke or immediate danger, leave and call 911 first.
Do you repair heat pumps you did not install?
Usually, yes. Text us a photo of the model sticker on your indoor or outdoor unit and a short description of the problem, and we will tell you quickly whether we can help.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Clean or check the filters every month or two during heavy use, and have the system professionally serviced once a year, ideally before the heating season. A tune-up keeps it efficient and catches small problems before they become no-heat calls.
Why is there ice on my outdoor heat pump unit?
A light frost that clears during the defrost cycle is normal in winter. Heavy ice that does not clear, or a unit encased in ice, usually means a defrost, airflow, drainage or refrigerant problem. Turn to backup heat if you have it and call us. Do not chip ice off the coil.
Can I reach Denate after hours?
Yes. Call or text (902) 789-9851. Urgent calls like no heat in winter get priority and go straight to our team. On-site work is booked by appointment.
