Which heat pump is right?

Four ways to heat and cool with a heat pump.

Not sure which one fits? That is exactly what your free Heat Pump Plan answers, with Good, Better and Best options side by side.

Ductless mini-split

A slim indoor wall unit connected to one outdoor unit. Best for a single room, a basement, a bonus room or an addition.

Best for: Homes with baseboards or no ductwork

Multi-zone system

One outdoor unit runs two to five indoor heads, each with its own temperature. Whole-home comfort without ducts.

Best for: Two-storey homes and open plans

Ducted & central

A heat pump that uses your existing ductwork, or new ducts, to heat and cool every room from one system.

Best for: Homes with a furnace or ducts

Cold-climate models

Units designed to keep heating in deep cold. We size and choose the model for your home and Nova Scotia winters.

Best for: Every Nova Scotia install

Oil to heat pump

Switching from oil? Plan the rebate first.

Oil-heated homes are some of the best candidates for a heat pump. The Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program closed to new applicants in July 2026, but you can still get rebates through Efficiency Nova Scotia's Home Energy Assessment, and moderate income households can add top-ups.

We help you book the assessment in the right order, size the new system, and decide whether to keep your oil system as backup.

Heat pump questions

What Halifax homeowners ask us most.

How much does a heat pump cost in Nova Scotia?

It depends on the system and the home. A single-room ductless unit, a multi-zone system and a ducted whole-home system are very different jobs, and things like your electrical panel, line-set length and how many rooms you want to heat all change the price.

The fastest way to a real number is our free Heat Pump Plan: within 24 hours you get a written price with Good, Better and Best options, your monthly payment with financing and any rebates you qualify for.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

Many single-room ductless installs are finished the same day. Multi-zone systems usually take one to three days, and ducted systems can take longer depending on the ductwork. Your Heat Pump Plan includes your timeline.

Do heat pumps work in a Nova Scotia winter?

Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating in deep cold, and a correctly sized system will heat most Nova Scotia homes through the winter. We size every system for your home and our winters, and we will tell you honestly if you should keep your existing heat as backup for the coldest nights.

Will I need an electrical panel upgrade for a heat pump?

Sometimes. Every heat pump needs its own circuit, and some older 100 amp panels do not have the room or capacity. We check your panel on the first visit, and because Denate is also an electrical company, any circuit or panel work is done by our own team, so you are not juggling two contractors.

Who is allowed to install a rebate-eligible heat pump?

Efficiency Nova Scotia requires heat pumps in its rebate programs to be installed by a certified Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM). Ask any installer to confirm this before you sign.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Financing is available on heat pump installs, panel upgrades and electrical work, on approved credit. Your Heat Pump Plan shows your monthly payment next to each option, and our payment calculator gives you a quick estimate.

Can I use financing and rebates together?

Usually, yes. Efficiency Nova Scotia rebates are paid after your final assessment, so financing covers the cost up front and many homeowners put the rebate toward the balance once it arrives. Check your loan's prepayment terms first.
