Why the order matters

Pick the rebate path before the equipment.

Most rebate problems happen when a homeowner installs first and tries to sort out the rebate later. The Home Energy Assessment needs a visit before the work and another after, and you have 12 months in between.

  1. Check income-based options first

If you may qualify for HomeWarming or Moderate Income top-ups, apply before anything else.

  2. Book your first assessment

Efficiency Nova Scotia assesses your home before any upgrade.

  3. Install with Denate

Right-size system, rebate model numbers, electrical done in-house.

  4. Final assessment, then your rebate

Book the final visit within 12 months. Rebates are paid after it is verified.

Rebate questions

Clear answers, no fine print.

What heat pump rebates are available in Nova Scotia in 2026?

Through Efficiency Nova Scotia, most homeowners use the Home Energy Assessment program: up to $5,000 in rebates, including $300 per ton for ductless and $500 per ton for ducted heat pumps. The assessment costs $199 (free for qualifying low and moderate income households).

Moderate income households can add Moderate Income Rebate top-ups of up to $5,000 more, for up to $10,000 combined. Lower income homeowners may qualify for no-charge upgrades through HomeWarming. Program rules change, so confirm before you buy. Your free Heat Pump Plan checks this for you.

Do I need an energy assessment before installing a heat pump?

For Efficiency Nova Scotia's Home Energy Assessment rebates, yes. Book the first assessment before any work, complete your upgrades, then book the final assessment. You have 12 months from your first assessment to finish the work. Installing first and applying later is the most common way people lose a rebate.

Is the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program still open?

No. Efficiency Nova Scotia closed the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program to new applicants in July 2026. Oil-heated homes can still switch to a heat pump using the Home Energy Assessment program, and moderate income households can add Moderate Income Rebate top-ups.

Who is allowed to install a rebate-eligible heat pump?

Efficiency Nova Scotia requires heat pumps in its rebate programs to be installed by a certified Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM). Ask any installer to confirm this before you sign.
